My books

Book Review
By Angela Searcy
Everest
By Gordon Korman

A few weeks ago I read a book about four children that entered a challenge to climb Mt. Everest. Of course there are hard times and good times, but in the end it’s a great book, written by one of my favorite authors Gordon Korman. Korman writes cliff hangers and suspense books (realistic fiction) and he is really good at it.
In the beginning a group of about 20 children set out to Everest training camp, taught by the great Cap Cerico, an Everest legend. Dominic, a 13 year old, is so excited to go because he loves Cap. He also loves Everest because his brother had climbed mountains before. Dominic is a great climber; he trains with his brother (climbing every thing in sight)!
The challenge is that 20 kids will go to training. There will be elimination days and the last four get to climb Mt. Everest. Ethan Zaph has a spot all ready, being the youngest person ever to summit the mountain at 16. So that leaves three spots open.
Tilt is another climber wanting to summit the mountain. But not for fun- he wants the fame. If he summits the mountain, he will be the youngest to summit Mt. Everest, being only 14. But he has one problem-Dominic.
Sammi is a girl who loves extremes so she really wants to climb the mountain for the rush. She is very athletic so she could easily get a spot on the team. She’s 15 so she probably won’t break any records.
Perry is a great climber but he really doesn’t want to climb. His rich uncle and he had spent time on some weekends and climbing mountains, so his uncle assumes that he loves to climb. And his Uncle owns the program so Perry didn’t have the guts to say no. He is 15, just like Sammi, so no record breaking for him.
So in the middle of the contest Ethan decides to drop out because he is going to climb with someone else, so Cap has to think even harder. Then he chooses his team.
Dominic, because he proved him self during training because he spent 14 hours saving someone’s life; Tilt because he was a good climber and Cap wanted him to break Ethan’s record; Perry because he was an okay climber and his uncle owned the thing; And Sammi, because he wanted a girl on the team and she was very fit.
Cap also had to deal with the press because someone was leaking information to them and saying Dominic shouldn’t climb, because he was too young. But he refuses to listen to the press. So off they go to Nepal. They spend a few weeks preparing for the altitude, so they don’t get altitude sickness. Finally after weeks of training they set out on the unforgiving mountain.
This is a great series and I just couldn’t put it down until I was done. My favorite chacter would have to be Dominic. Because of his self perseverance, he never gave up. So go get your self a copy, because Everest will be a final resting place for one of the four.
